A stand dedicated to Churchward’s 47xx class mixed traffic Consolidation locomotive was a highlight of the Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition in 2011. This popular design for a model loco was shown in five different sizes, from Gauge 1 up. The one on 2 1/2” gauge was Lady Kitty, built by LBSC at Norbury in 1929, and described in Model Engineer magazine at the time. Now owned by Paul Wiese, President of the National 2 1/2” Gauge Association.

These great engines were gathered to spread the word about building another 47xx, no 4709, this time in 4ft 8.5in. gauge, by the Great Western Society at Didcot. A good deal of cash has already been donated to the project, but there is a need for more, plus practical help in the workshop.

Much behind-the-scenes work has already taken place. Also the project has also received a major boost following the acquisition of three donor locomotives (4115, 5227 and 2861) and a 3500 gallon tender from the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

Project manager is Paul Carpenter, working under the direction of GW

Society locomotive manager, Dennis Howells, who masterminded the restoration of 6023 King Edward II and construction of the power bogie for the ex-GWR Steam Railmotor No. 93. Paul has assembled a design team, and original works drawings are being used  to identify parts from the donor locomotives which are suitable for the 2-8-0. Fortunately there proved to be far more parts in common than anticipated.

If you would like to help with this full-size build there are two options. If you would like to give a donation of any size or a regular contribution, contact Richard Croucher, Chairman, Great Western Society, at Didcot Railway Centre, Didcot, Oxon, OX11 7NJ (email Richard from here). If you would like to join one of the working parties contact Paul Carpenter from here.
