GORGON PADDLE STEAM SHIP BEAM ENGINE

Chris Eatherton displayed his model of the Gorgon paddle steam ship beam engine, designed by Guenter Kallies, at Bristol in 2017. HMS Gorgon was the first of the Royal Navy’s steam vessels, built in 1837 by Seaward & Co, as a wooden paddle 6-gun frigate. The Gorgon gave its name to this type of two-cylinder direct-acting engine which was used on a number of navy vessels. The engines were built at the Canal Ironworks, Millwall, East London. The model design has proven popular since it was published in Model Engineer magazine in 2006. The model is designed to be built entirely from bar stock - no castings are required.
