THE late Don Young followed up his super design of the Great Central Railway ‘Jersey Lilly’ with another GCR locomotive, Immingham in 5in. gauge. Immingham, no 1097, was one of ten engines of the GCR Class 8F 4-6-0s to become 6097 in LNER Class B4. The class was designed to haul fast goods, and fish trains beween Grimsby and London and Manchester. Later they were to be moved to work the Kings Cross to Leeds and Doncaster, and later still for excursion traffic. The class was built by Beyer Peacock in 1906 and continued in service into the 1940s.
Immingham survived until 1950. None of the class was preserved.
The locomotive was given its name for use hauling management and guests to the construction ceremony of a new dock at Immingham. It was the first GCR 4-6-0 to be given a name.
This excellent model is photographed at the Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition, displayed by R Clift.
Drawings and castings for Immingham are available from Reeves 2000 and a 2 1/2in. design is available from Chris Barron.
