These engines were built for John Fowler by Kitson and Hewitson, Leeds, between 1855 and 1862 and were the first ploughing engines to go into production.

This model is built to 1:6 scale by H Williams photographed at Harrogate 2010.

The slanting shaft drive shaft from the crankshaft to  the rear wheels is through a series of bevel gears to a large bevel gear keyed to the rear axle. The near side wheel is connected via a drive pin, while the off side wheel is driven by a friction band.

This engine features a Burton Patent Cup Winding Drum beneath the boiler, which is used to winch the ploughshares across the field.
