Counting down to Harrogate

Do it on-line
Two major UK shows, Harrogate and Bristol, now have on-line booking. Bristol tell us that: "On-Line ticket sales facility for our exhibition is now up and running on our website.  It is quick and easy to use and the ticket will appear in your in-box as an email attachment. http://www.bristolmodelengineers.co.uk/Exhibition/exhib.htm"
Tickets for Harrogate are at Harrogate exhibition.

This week
On MEWS this week we look forward to the Harrogate exhibition with a look back at some of the models on display in recent times. One of the great things about Harrogate is the great variety of models on show. There really is something for everybody.
And usually there is something really quite different, like our Model of the Week, except that it isn’t a model, its a full-size steam buggy by J Bregazzi. And it is a triumph of inventiveness with its recycled parts.
We also have details of assembly of Gail Graham’s Lobo Pup twin, as usual with full explanation and photos of the entire process for engines of both bearing types.

Treasure hunt
The Great Railway Treasure Hunt 2013 is a free competition for children under  14 years.  The challenge is to visit as many participating railways and museums in the UK as possible, seeking out the treasure by completing the relevant quizzes. The winner with the most correct answers will win the £500 cash prize!
With a runner up prize of £250, another £250 for the person who has visited the most railways plus local prizes from the railways, there’s lots of treasure to be won!
So what are you waiting for? Start planning your days out now! There are already 16 railways up and running with the quiz this Easter Weekend, with more to follow soon...
The competition runs until September 30 so there is plenty of time to fit in as many visits as possible throughout this spring and summer.  The Treasure Hunt is the perfect excuse to go visiting your favourite and new railways!
Take a look at Chris Vine’s website for details of participating venues all over the UK and download the quiz sheets.
Here is the link to the website page with all the details: Treasure Hunt.
Chris also has a new Activity Book available in the Peter’s Railway series.

Geoff Sheppard
There are a number of people in model engineering that are genuinely selfless. One such was Geoff Sheppard who sadly died on March 27 following a heart attack.
He was very well known throughout the hobby, and especially at the Bristol Society where he was president and had held many posts over the years. Geoff was a former editor of Model Engineers’ Workshop, and continued to support the Model Engineer Exhibition with his wonderful wife, Gill, organizing exhibitors at the event and lending a hand anywhere it was needed. He was also one of those at Bristol responsible for the great success of the exhibition there, which although a club event, is every bit as professional as the major commercial shows.
As the Bristol Society says in its tribute: “Geoff was a lovely, kind hearted man and, when asked for a favour or advice, nothing was ever too much trouble for him. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and our deepest condolences go out to his wife Gill and their children.”
We have lost a good friend. And a delightful man.

Roll on May 10
We are now looking forward to the Harrogate exhibition
Get a flavour of it from this video from 2011, and visit our reports for more. It is not until May 10 - 12, so if you have an exhibit or would like your club to have a space, get in touch with Lou Rex:

GLR Kennions up and running
After ordering a set of drawings, we heard from Richard Clark that, having taken over the GLR/Kennion Bros business and despite being overwhelmed with orders, they are gradually sorting out all the stock and replacing tooling and material stocks. The website is also being updated and improved, while work is underway to produce a new catalogue. We’ve always liked the range of drawings, castings, etc available from here, and wish Richard all the very best for the future. The company is now called GLR Kennions Ltd. Visit the website here. Bookmark it, too.

Red devil
We hear from Adam Harris at Camden Miniature Steam Services that a reprint of David Wardale's “infamous” book will be available early next month. Price is £39.95 plus postage as appropriate.
“Must admit I never thought I would persuade Dave to let me do this, but under some extra pressure from Chris Newman of the 5AT Group he caved in with good grace!” Says Adam.
“Other than a new cover design, this is an exact reprint of the original, so doesn't include anything on the 5AT or Dave's current thoughts.
“Unfortunately it is still that very condensed print, but it would not have been commercially viable to reset it to meet Dave's standards of accuracy.”
Also available from Camden in May is:

Available on DVD
To make MEWS more manageable, we have had a clear out of the old articles. Many of these have remained very popular over the last two or three years, so rather than dump them most have been put on to a DVD which can be used in your web browser. It is now available and details can be found on a separate page.

Articles for MEWS
Although we now publish about 18/20 new pieces a month we’re not short of material for MEWS. Equally we do not work too far in advance so that articles have to be stored away for months, even years. Generally we publish within a month of receiving a contribution. But it is always good to add in material from new contributors to keep things fresh. Let us have your ideas.
