At the 2009 Model Engineer Exhibition, a number of judges displayed some of their own models. Ron Harris, judge of I/C engines, loaned this outstanding 1:6 scale model of a Pratt & Whitney R 1830. This is a double row 14-cylinder radial engine known as the Twin Wasp. it was used in a number of aircraft in the United States and Europe in the 1930s. These included the Bristol Beaufort, RAF’s Catalina, Curtis P-36 Hawk, Douglas Skytrain, Grumman Wildcat, Saab 17 and 18, Short Sunderland and Vultee Vanguard among many others. In fact, this was the most produced Aircraft engine ever, with no less than 173,618 being built.
This engine had bore and stroke of 5.5in. (140mm) and dispaced 1,830cu. in. Depending on the compression ratio it produced either 775 or 820hp at 2,400rpm. maximum hp was 1,200. Arguably the most successful aero engine ever.
Ron has also built a single row 9-cylinder Pratt & Whitney Wasp.
A sensational model of a sensational engine. Stunning.
