Its the 30th birthday of Sweet Pea, the outstanding design of Jack Buckler, first published in Engineering in Miniature and later in a TEE book. During that time large numbers have been successfully built - many by absolute beginners. Being based on a narrow gauge Bagnall type engine, it is large. Imposing even. But it is designed to be simple. The marine type boiler is much simpler to build than the usual loco type, and the Hackworth valve gear is definitely an easier proposition than anything except slip eccentric. It is simple and practical and expect many more to be completed in the next 30 years. The photos here are all of the fine loco built by Graham Hardwick, all except the final one of Paul, by P Towle. They were all taken at the 2011 Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition, just two of the many on show.
