MODEL OF THE WEEK
2-stroke hit and miss engine
Jan Ridders is a real innovator in the sphere of model I/C engines. Such a lot of originality is the hallmark of all his designs.
Several have already appeared on this website, complete with drawings and instructions for others to follow. Jan’s approach is always one of simplifying things as far as possible. Also to make things as easy to build as possible. Some notable successes include his pressure-controlled two-stroke and the his version of an Otto cycle engine. Now he has followed those with a two-stroke hit’n’miss engine. Yes, that’s right two-stroke. Impossible? Well, we hope to include a full article by Jan on this amazing engine shortly. Meanwhile, here is a video of it working. And doesn’t it run beautifully?
Main elements of the design are the pressure control valve as used on his simple two-stroke engine which eliminates the need for an exhaust valve. Specially designed for this engine is a unique governor which is the mechanism used to lift the ball and so allow for two-stroke operation. In full-size practice we believe that there was probably only one hit’n’miss two-stroke, the May Tag. Jan’s engine is designed to run without the other engine’s smoke and pollution.
We look forward to the full description of this unique engine.
