Seeing Brian Young’s latest model reminded us of the days when arrival of the tar sprayer in the road would have people taking their children outside to inhale the ‘healthy’ fumes from the warm tar, guaranteed to cure and prevent colds! Now we know to avoid the stuff. However, Brian’s model is not to be avoided. It is a slight departure for Brian, doyen of the Guild of Model Wheelwrights. The only pieces of wood in sight on The Flapper tar sprayer are the brake blocks. Most of his models (apart from the 2,000 wheelbarrows, each in in different wood) have a agricultural rather than highway theme, other than vehicles that rode the highways with one or two horse power. No doubt the horses were better off with their new blacktop from ‘The Flapper’ than the kids who were made to breath the stuff in.
