WOOLWICH ARSENAL NG DIESEL HUNSLET

Building this model occupied 600 man hours of work by Jim Kirby. Each bogie is powered by a 1500 Watt (2HP), 415 volt, three-phase AC traction motor. Current is controlled by a variable frequency inverter. Power is supplied via a 230 voltAC alternator driven by a Kubota three cylinder water cooled diesel engine. Two braking systems are installed. One is an air-operated disc brake on each bogie, the other is a separate vacuum system for train braking.

The prototoype Carnegie built by Hunslet for the Woolwich Arsenal narrow gauge system, later preserved at the Royal Gunpowder Mills at Waltham Abbey, Essex. The model is in 7.25” gauge, to 1:4 scale, and was shown at a National Model Engineering and Modelling Exhibition in its Harrogate days.
