ROBEY SUGAR CANE MILL AND ENGINE

Part 3/3 by Julius de Waal

Recently MEWS’ delve into the engineering archives came across a sugar cane mill and engine built by Robey of Lincoln 150 years earlier. Sugar mills were widely exported to sugar growing British colonies to crush sugar cane and the juice converted into sugar. The remaining solids, called Bagasse, were used to fire the boilers powering the mill engine. Details of the Robey mill can be found here. Julius’ drawings to produce a model of the Robey mill appear here and conclude in the next issue of MEWS.

Although drawings reproduce well on this website, they are even better as saved downloads.
