Following a public outcry, a separate Army Veterinary Corps (AVC) of non-commissioned officers and other ranks was set up in 1903. Three years later it was merged with the Army Veterinary Department.

During the First World War (1914-18), the AVC grew rapidly and by 1918, nearly half of all veterinary surgeons in Britain were serving in the corps.

Following the Armistice in 1918, it was granted the 'Royal' prefix in recognition of its service.
