TOBY - THE SIMPLE 0-4-2NG TANK LOCO - IN 3.5” GAUGE

Part two by Julius de Waal

When Steve Eaton first published his Toby design it was (and remains) the simplest passenger hauling live steam locomotive design available, and many have been built. Julius re-visited the design on these pages. We also asked him to look at a 3.5” gauge version, as the original Toby could easily be made in that gauge just by altering a few dimensions. However, that was not possible with Julius’ version, but he has now prepared this version in 3.5” gauge which is a scaled up version of his 2.5”. This makes for a large loco. However, it retains many of the simple elements of the original, including the slip eccentric valve gear. As a result, in this size, builders are advised to ensure that the regulator seals well. Or better, perhaps, change to Stephenson’s valve gear.
